How Can Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Help You Achieve Goals?

How Can Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Help You Achieve Goals?

Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) will give you some of the best tools needed to achieve your goals. You learn how to calmly asses situations, logically progress through tough times, and set goals in a way that ensures you will continue to progress. To make things even easier, BJJ is mapped out in miles stones through the belt progression. Not only do you have goals preset with a process, you develop other tools which you will use throughout your journey.

I am not going to sugar coat this. Progressing through the BJJ belts is one of the hardest thing you will do in your life. But this difficulty will also be one of the best tools for achieving your goals.

Increase Discipline, Courage, and Focus

BJJ will test every fiber of your resolve to achieve your dreams, physically, mentally and emotionally. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will give you self esteem, discipline, focus, determination, confidence, courage, patience and calmness. This is the short list of the benefits you will gain with BJJ. It won’t do the work for you, but it will teach you how to face challenges, become disciplined and strive toward your goals both on and off the mat.

Stay Calm and Keep Training Jiu Jitsu

Starting BJJ puts people in a unique position, you are presented with very basic life experience; survival. In training you learn how to adapt and grow in order to find a successful answer and solutions to the basic survival question. We strive to make this process fun, as the road is difficult. While your health is not directly threatened on the mats, you are put in many compromising and uncomfortable situations that ready you for real world issues.

You are taught how to calmly assess and apply techniques in less than calm situations. BJJ teaches you the calm and collected mindset necessary to achieve your goals. It provides this mindset by teaching you how to identify problem areas, learn and figure out solutions, all while in the midst of chaos. Life doesn’t slow down for you to achieve you goals, it takes having the capability to achieve them alongside dealing with the rest of it.

Whether you are just starting off on your martial arts journey, or you have been training for years, setting goals will help you in your progression both on and off the mats.

Goal Setting at Dark Horse BJJ in Longmont, CO.

Dark Horse Jiu Jitsu  offers one on one coaching and goal setting throughout your membership. If you need help with setting your goals, achieving your goals, or getting into a goal oriented mindset, we are here to help you. Are you currently a Dark Horse student? We offer goal setting meetings to help establish and achieve your goals, whether they are in martial arts or other aspects of life.

Do you have a goal?

At your goal meeting you will identify a goal or perhaps several small goals which lead to a larger goal. The time it takes to achieve the goal depends on the intensity of the goal. Many large goals can appear insurmountable or even impossible causing an individual to lose focus or desire. Breaking the larger goal into smaller and more attainable goals helps.

Another skill we focus on at Dark Horse is to use visualisation to mentally create a picture of the work you need to do to get there. Visualize what it will look like when you achieve the goal. Visualization will help you to truly believe you will achieve your goals whether they are large or small.

Goals and goal setting is not just for Brazilian jiu jitsu

The tools you are exposed to here are not just for BJJ. If you are not familiar with the S.M.A.R.T. formula it has been a fundamental process used in the business world for nearly 20 years. With what you learn through our goal setting meetings you can start applying to pursue your dreams off the mat as well.

How often do you need a goal meeting?

Regularly scheduled goal meeting is healthy but how often do you need a goal meeting? You should set a goal meeting anytime you want to create a goal or need assistance achieving a goal. A good number to work with for BJJ belt progression is two goal meetings per belt. Having a goal meeting at the beginning of a new belt in order to understand what your focus should be for the next belt.  Scheduling another one in the middle of your belt progress will give you feedback on where you have come and allow you to adjust your training to keep your progress moving forward. This does not mean you only need two goal meetings. We love seeing people succeed on and off the mats so schedule a goal meeting anytime you need.
